Gap Analysis of Data Playbooks for AfricaNLP

A study of 86 playbooks, handbooks, and methodology guides against the needs of AfricaNLP dataset builders, prepared by HausaNLP (Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria) and EthioNLP (Bahir Dar University ICT4D, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia) and submitted to the Masakhane African Languages Hub under the Annotation and Playbook Grant in July 2026.

The report explains how the landscape was mapped, scores each guide on 13 dataset-lifecycle stages, groups the guides into four traditions, and reads the gap stage by stage, showing where existing guidance stops. It closes with the outline of the playbook this project set out to write in response.
